As an actor Abhishek Bachchan has redefined the meaning of character roles.

He’s proved time and again how you can be a scene-stealer without trying too hard. Think Yuva, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and you know what we mean.

In Ahmedabad recently Junior Bachchan turned heads, created quite a stir and fan frenzy. In short, he sure shook and stirred Amvadadis. After a much acclaimed stint in the biopic Guru, Abhi gets ready to kick some serious butt again in a new film. He flashes that trademark smile that’s a heartbreaker always and confesses that even though he’s playing a superhero in the film he’s not trying to “compete with other superhero films made in the past. The film is about recognising your inner strength. Given that good films work in Bollywood, we are feeling optimistic.”

While filmmaker Goldie Behl happens to be a childhood friend, that wasn’t why Abhishek chose to work with him. “Goldie and I had been discussing various scripts. When this film came up, I felt like doing it.” Abhishek’s working with his mom in the film too. “I think it is quite pleasant when people ask me about my working relationship with my mother because most of the times I am always asked about how I follow my father. My mother is a spontaneous actor. She lives in the moment when she acts – and that’s really the best quality about her.”

The family Bachchans are always surrounded by controversies. Be it their famous temple visits,the recent MNS tussle or the blog wars. Does it ever take a toll on their private life?

“No, not at all. I think you have no right to be an actor if you don’t like the attention. My private life is still very private. No one knows what’s happening in my life at home. And I don’t let any controversies bother me either. Such things should not get to you.”

While wife Aishwarya is featuring in Pink Panther and dad Bachchan contemplating Hollywood projects, Chhota B has no such plans. “Pa has that privilege to plan and reject projects. And it’s not about Hollywood, if it’s a good film be it any language I am always ready to do it. Even Ash has that freedom, but in my case I still have a long way to go. I don’t have the option to plan my career. I just try to choose good scripts. I had 17 flops to my career before being recognised as an actor in my own right. So I think I am blessed that they appreciate my work now.”

Critically acclaimed for Guru and Sarkar Raaj recently, Abhishek’s doing the Karan Johar production Dostana where he essays the role of a homosexual. “I had no qualms acting as one because the script is written wonderfully. There was nothing embarrassing about it. Having said that, I have yet to discover my forte because I believe I am an actor who can be moulded to do anything wonderfully if the script and director are good.”

Finally when we talk about love, family and marriage, that ‘pleased as punch’ smile comes back again. “I love being in love. What more I can say to that? I am proud to be a Bachchan and I am even happier when the world's most beautiful woman said ‘yes’ to me. Aishwarya had achieved much more in life, when I proposed to her. So I am happy that she is also now a Bachchan.”

Abhishek has visited Ahmedabad several times since his Refugee and Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost days. “Even when my earlier films flopped in other cities, Ahmedabad audiences gave a reasonable opening to all my films. So I really feel Gujarat is a lucky state for me.”

On that cheerful, feel-good note and a warm goodbye later we leave the charismatic Bachchan basking in the adulation of his fans.
