Bollywood reaped an American windfall in 2006 with its films making up half of 14 foreign language films that grossed more than $2 million in US — more than any other language.
That's still a pittance compared to the billion-dollar bonanza a single Hollywood movie can haul in, but the seven Hindi hits of 2006 in the US offered "another sign that India’s film industry is capturing broad, even global, appeal," Forbes magazine says in its latest issue.
After staying away from studios, Sanjay Dutt is ready to don the greasepaint and face the camera. In fact, a number of Sanju starrers are in various stages of production, including those produced by his company, White Feather Films.
There’s SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA too, which is almost 80% complete and requires 10 days of Dutt. In fact, the film will be complete once director Apoorva Lakhia cans Dutt’s portions. “Yes, Sanju is shooting for SHOOTOUT from 10th January onwards. We’re almost through with the film and hope to release it in April, after the World Cup,” Apoorva divulges.
Mani Ratnam's 'Guru,' supposedly based on the life and times of the late business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani, will be dubbed and released in Telugu as 'Gurukanth.'
A spokesperson from Mani Ratnam's camp admits the development, saying, "South-based producer Janapriya Prasad has acquired the Telugu version rights. He will even have an audio of the Telugu version released by the year-end. The Telugu version will be released next year."
Guru stars Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R Madhavan, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty. The film is slated for release on 12 January, 2007 worldwide.
Ash, Abhishek and Mallika all have arresting makeovers in Mani Ratnam's next, Guru. Designer Nikhaar Dhawan who has created the same gives us the lowdown on each...
Cinematographer Rajiv Menon says, "I think this is the first time Mani has shot a film abroad. This is a great film on many counts. For Abhishek, it’s probably a landmark film. I think he has done his job well. Abhishek has a childlike enthusiasm and goofiness on the sets, but when it comes to giving a shot he is an instinctive and attentive actor."
Filmmaker Mani Ratnam's latest offering, Guru, is a bilingual that is made in Hindi and Tamil.
Although the story has nothing to do with Tamil Nadu - unlike his earlier films - and most of the actors are from Bollywood, the Tamil version is eagerly awaited. After all, it's a Mani Ratnam movie.
After two excellent weeks at the box office, D2 did see a fall [50%], though of a kind that is on par with industry standards. With 11 crores coming in the third week, the film now stands at 68 crores and would already be the highest grosser ever by the time you read this report.
