Bollywood's Bachchans tip Toronto for tour debut

Indian acting superstars Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan dropped into Toronto Friday to announce the city as a likely first stop for the upcoming Unforgettable Tour, celebrating the world of Bollywood cinema.

The hot newlywed couple were greeted by a mob of fans outside downtown Toronto's Royal York Hotel, where they made the announcement.

"If all goes well, and God willing, we will premiere the Unforgettable Tour in the city of Toronto because we feel that it is the best city to premiere the tour in," Abhishek Bachchan said during a flashy press conference Friday that also included Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.

"It's a great honour to be in the presence of the second most beautiful woman in the world," McGuinty said, adding: "I had to say that, Aishwarya, because my wife is watching and I don't want to sleep in the garage."

The Bachchans smiled politely, clearly accustomed to such fawning. The couple is, after all, Bollywood royalty.

Judging by the mob scene at the hotel as they arrived and departed, they are fast becoming megastars in North America as well.

Aishwarya's first American-made movie, "The Last Legion," was released on Friday. Many who attended Friday's news conference were clearly under the couple's spell, whooping and applauding when the Bachchans stood to speak. Even those who waited in line to ask the newlyweds questions posed those of the "What makes you so awesome?" variety.

"As you can see, in showbiz we carry our cheerleaders with us," Abhishek joked to the crowd.

The Bachchans say The Unforgettable Tour aims to raise awareness about global warming.

"Terrible, terrible things are happening to this Earth of ours and we want to use this platform to try to acquaint people about what it's about and what they can do," said Abhishek. "We're using this opportunity to spread the word."

"We just don't know enough about global warming and there's so much we can do - even the little things - to help fight the effects were are seeing on the planet because of it, particularly in India where there have been such terrible floods," said Abhishek.

"We as entertainers can help make people aware," he said. As for this Bollywood blockbuster's impact on the environment, "We are doing everything we can to make this tour as environmentally friendly as possible."

Bachchan, son of Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan, praised Toronto as home to a large fanbase for Indian cinema. His wife, clad in an elegant black suit, had similar sentiments. "You have always extended such an incredibly warm welcome to us - so much love," she said.

It was also where the couple, who were married in April, premiered their film Guru in January — the first Bollywood movie to debut outside of India.

During that visit they were both touched that hundreds of fans withstood freezing temperatures just to the pair as they walked into a downtown theatre.

"We were overwhelmed," said the actress who first garnered international attention in 2002 when she appeared at the Cannes International Film Festival for "Devdas." That turning point landed the superstar a contract with L'Oreal, a leading role in the 2004 English production, "Bride & Prejudice" and recognition from TIME Magazine as one of the "100 Most Influential People" in the world.

As for married life, "I'm not just saying this because my husband is with me," she joked, "but marriage for me was a very conscious decision. It has been a very worthwhile experience. I have an incredible family and that, rather than my career, has always come first."

Love was in full force as Aishwarya told of her joy at being married, despite some sniping in the Indian and British media earlier this year that she could be sounding a death knell to her career by getting hitched.

"It does get hectic but I am in a very happy zone. I am looking forward to babies and I am enjoying marriage," she said as some at the news conference cheered their approval.

Her husband's adoration was quickly evident when she was asked about "The Last Legion," co-starring Ben Kingsley and Colin Firth.

"It was my first experience with an action film ... it was an experience I shall always cherish," she said modestly.

Abhishek was quick to interrupt: "She's very good in the film," he said, as his beaming wife told the crowd: "That's my dear husband!"

The globe-trotting tour will feature concerts showcasing the lavish song-and-dance performance numbers from popular Bollywood films, with the three Bachchans as well as other South Asian film stars set to take the stage.

Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu and Ritesh Deshmukh were among those also on the lineup when the musical extravaganza was first announced in June, during the festivities around the International Indian Film Academy Awards in Sheffield, England.

Set to begin next summer, the Unforgettable Tour is scheduled to stop in 18 countries around the world, including Vancouver, New York, Los Angeles, London, Cairo, Sydney, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Organizers have also expressed a desire to create a TV special revealing life behind the scenes on the road with the performers as they proceed through the tour.
