Abhi looks ahead on his birthday
4 Feb 2008 | 520 Views | Saba

This could well be the year of Abhishek Bachchan.

At 32 today, he has much to look forward to. There’s Sarkar Raj to start with, and then the F-X caper Drona, before coming to the mellow Dilli 6. At home, too, there’s reason to celebrate as wife Aishwarya’s career is neatly balancing itself with her domestic roles and responsibilities. The still newly-married Bachchan scion takes BT’s questions with a smirk and a swagger...

You’re 32 today...

Thanks for reminding me. I don’t get bogged down by age. I’m happy to be where I am.

Where have you been hiding yourself?

Nowhere! Just been shooting in Jaipur for Rakeysh Mehra’s Dilli 6 in freezing winter.

This year is special for Aishwarya too

Yes, she has Jodha Akbar. I’ve seen the trailer and heard the music. I love it! And I’m not saying this because of my wife or dear friend Duggu (Hrithik). I really like her pairing with him. I think they looked good together in Dhoom 2 as well.

Aishwarya looks like a true royal princess...

Most definitely! I married her. And I think she’s the most beautiful woman on earth.

Do you and Aishwarya discuss one another’s work?

Oh yes. I’m always very keen to know her reactions to my assignments and projects. She has very keen insight. She’s a wonderful sounding-board.

Does she take your advice?

Certainly. When she was in two minds about doing Pink Panther because my grandmother was ailing and this film required her to be out of the country for two months, I encouraged her because it was a wonderful opportunity to work with some great actors. I take Aishwarya’s advice just as I take my parents’ advice. There are some great actors in the house.

Are there film discussions at home?

We’re very good at leaving our work behind.

You figure in Taare Zameen Par

Yes in the list of dyslexic people. I happen to be a spokesperson for dyslexia. When Aamir explained what kind of film he was making, I was happy to lend my support.

You’ve struggled hard to get where you are. Did being a Bachchan make it easy?

I can’t deny that access to the industry was easier because I am a Bachchan. And I guess I did have it much easier than many people. But I had to struggle. I almost gave up after 17 failures. My father said, just keep working and believe in yourself. And I’m working hard. There’s no formula for success.

Are you pleased with your films this year?

Yes, how wonderful to do a Sarkar Raj, Drona and Dilli 6 in the same year!

How’s your co-star in Dilli 6, Sonam Kapoor?

I saw Saawariya and thought she was wonderful. When I started my career I wasn’t half as good as Sonam or Ranbir. It’s wonderful to see this eager, enthusiastic new generation coming in.
