| The Little B, Abhishek Bachchan, has a lot of Ds lined up – his forthcoming movies are Drona, Dilli 6 and Dostana.
And for Drona, director and “very dear friend” Goldie Behl had Abhishek strapped underneath a train for a scene. “That’s something you never think you’d do,” says Abhishek. “I guess that’s a good monotony breaker.”
You don’t say. There isn’t a lot of monotony in Abhishek’s life, though. Rumours about him and Aishwarya expecting a baby pop up every few days in gossip columns, but he’s unfazed by all of that. “We’re public figures,” he says matter-of-factly. “As such, we’re open to public scrutiny and we have to accept that. You know what the truth is, your near and dear ones know what the truth is. Aishwarya is not pregnant, and I’m sure people would know if she were. She’s currently on tour. But it’s not a problem if people ask us about it,” he smiles.
However, there is something that gets AB’s baby upset – “when dad doesn’t write his blog,” Abhishek exclaims. “I want to wake up in the morning and log on to the blog. Just his talent for writing makes the blog an everyday part of my life. He is my father, so I know these things about him, but I love the way he writes. Even as a kid, he would teach me how to write essays and letters. For fans to get to know the workings of his mind, and that it’s been put across in writing, is wonderful.”
On a flying visit to Delhi from the Unforgettable Tour abroad, Abhishek was quite nonchalant about the controversy over Shah Rukh Khan competing with them through the Temptations Tour. “Everyone is too busy doing what he or she has to do,” he says. “I’m sure Shah Rukh is doing the same thing. He’s too busy a person to be thinking about things like this... and I know that he doesn’t. At the end of the day, it’s for the audience that we are working this hard and not for our ego or to prove our superiority over someone else.” And it is for the audience that he tries to improve with each movie. “I hope I’ve improved – at least, that’s the idea. The day you stop learning and evolving is the day you should stop working.
Creative stagnation is suicide for an actor.” Which is why, from playing the brooding Shankar Nagre in Sarkar Raj, which he calls “one of the most demanding characters I’ve played so far,” Abhishek is doing the role of an NRI who visits India with his grandmother, in Dilli 6. And yes, Amitabh does play his grandfather in the film. “Dad is doing a favour to Rakeysh. It’s actually just one scene, in which dad plays my grandfather. It’s a very brief appearance,” he says.
